The three girls ran about 300 yards to a neighbor's home, where they asked ... if he had a gun and could "go over there and take care of this
guy". When he hesitated, the girls called 911... Police shoot
killer after two children killed with pitchfork ...
Locked up Gun kept children from defending themselves ... If
only Jessica had a gun available to her, she could have stopped the whole thing.
If she had been properly armed, she could have stopped him in his tracks.

... Those horrible, barely reported pitchfork murders of two
children in Merced, Calif., and the wounding of a third child, can be laid at
the feet of the state's gun storage laws, according to their great-uncle, Rev.
John Hilton. The oldest of the five children whose home was invaded tried to
call police about the naked stranger with a pitchfork, but the line was dead. So
14-year-old Jessica Carpenter climbed out a window and ran to a neighbor.
According to the Fresno Bee -- anything but a pro-gunrights newspaper -- she
didn't ask the neighbor to call 911, but to get his gun and "take care of
this guy." Their father had a gun in the home and had taught his
children to shoot, but he kept it locked and hidden from the children.
"He's more afraid of the law than of somebody coming in for his
family," Rev. Hilton told the Bee. "He's scared to death of leaving
the gun where the kids could get it because he's afraid of the law. He's scared
to teach his children to defend themselves." "If only Jessica had a
gun available to her, she could have stopped the whole thing. If she had been
properly armed, she could have stopped him in his tracks." Preach on,
